The recent announcement of Slowdive reuniting has been greeted warmly by the music community as some of the best music news of 2014 so far, and with that idea we visit the classic Slowdive album Souvlaki. The band was part of the story of the classic London-based recording label Creation Records, who was responsible for giving rise to The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Oasis, Ride and and a little band called My Bloody Valentine.
Souvlaki’s release was impeccably timed with the apex of the shoegaze and Brit Pop movement, two genres the band definitely channeled. They were capable of creating musical movements with their music -- which is to say that there was always a sense of something bigger and more awe-inspiring going on in these songs. Substance mattered. The band had moved from just making tripped-out mood music into the actual crafting of songs.
