North By Northeast

Becoming known as one of those festivals that doesn't select its bands until weeks before the actual festival, North By Northeast is a northern reaction the South By Southwest festival. No affiliation between the two, but somewhere along the way, someone said, "why don't we do one too?"

And so the story began for the North By Northeast festival. 3 nights, almost 400 bands in 25 clubs in Toronto. Accompanied of course by non-stop panels, roundtables, workshops, seminars, and speakers for those who actually wake up while there's still daylight.

The biggest NXNE news that they have to offer so far is that The New York Dolls will be playing + lead singer David Johansen will be interviewed by Canadian musicologist Rob Bowman in an 'intimate setting.' David Johansen is most noted for his time fronting the New York punk band the New York Dolls, but is also remembered as Buster Poindexter.

There's is also a simultaneous North By Northeast film festival, and they have announced six films so far. The films include Rave Against The Machine by Stevan Riley, Richard Rudy, and James Harvey. Hair High by noted animator Bill Plympton is also slated, which includes voices by Matt Groening, David Carradine, and Beverley D'Angelo.

The schedule for the music festival is due to be announced at the end of April.
