Uncover the Fascinating Facts that Make Roulette a Timeless Classic

Roulette is a game that has managed to stand the test of time. It is an all-time classic and one that has been enjoyed by millions of players worldwide.

It is a game based on chance, but it remains one of the most simplistic to enjoy. Players have to try and accurately predict where the ball will land. There are ways in which an experience can be enhanced through the use of different bets depending on the variant played, but the game's main premise is to try and pick the number in which the ball will land on the wheel.

Roulette was Created by Accident

Invented in the early stages of the 18th century, the game continues to attract players in vast numbers today, but it only happened due to it being an accident. The game was born out of an invention by Blaise Pascal, although it is not what the French mathematician and physicist had in mind.

When he developed the wheel, he sought to solve the mystery behind continuous motion. He did not end up solving it, but he created a mechanic that has gone on to provide players with huge amounts of fun.

The Number of the Devil

The name “roulette” - which means “little wheel” in French - was born in the 18th century. The game itself is thought to have come from an Italian derivative called “Biribi”, as it featured a banker randomly pulling out a number between 1 and 70 from a bag. The French version used a wheel instead of a bag; the rest is history.

However, while it is commonly known as roulette, it has also obtained the name “The Devil’s Game”, as the figures used on the pockets all add up to 666, the number that is associated with the devil. Given that wins when playing this game can be difficult to obtain, it is perhaps no real surprise that some started to give it this moniker as Satan is a fearful beast in religion.

Number of Versions Available Online

It is possible to argue that roulette’s popularity has boomed in the 21st century because of the many online variants that are now available to enjoy. Players can visit a casino site where they can pick and choose from many different roulette variants possible to play from.

These variants can include traditional forms of the classic game, with European (single 0), American (double 00), and French versions (slightly different layout to European) largely possible to play, as well as modern takes of the table game. Lightning Roulette is perhaps the most famous of versions to have been made available, as it uses tech to enhance the win potential players can obtain.

The Lucky Numbers

Superstitions can be a big thing for gamblers, as they believe certain omens can bring them the luck and fortune they need to win. This has been experienced with roulette, with many believing that a variety of lucky numbers are available on the wheel.

Although 13 (unlucky for some), 0, 6, and 34 are typically considered numbers to avoid due to various shared superstitions and thoughts, many like to think 7, 17, 23, and 24 are among the luckiest to wager on. The number 7 is perceived as a lucky number in many cultures, while 17 is directly in the middle of the table. The placement of 23 and 24 on the table naturally attracts players' eyes, so many believe it can be lucky as the ball may also be attracted to them.

Albert Einstein has had a say on Roulette

When thinking about Albert Einstein's contributions to the world with his theory of relativity and his general impact on modern physics, the game of roulette might not be immediately thought about despite his mathematical background.

Widely thought of as the smartest man to have ever lived, he was quoted saying, ‘No one can beat roulette unless they steal all the money when the dealer is not looking’. It is sound advice, but that has not stopped millions from trying to disprove his comments.

The Bottom Line

Roulette comes with a very deep and interesting story behind it, something that has gone into improving its popularity to become one of the all-time casino classics. Many versions have since been created since its accidental invention by Blaise Pascal. A casino fan can play this game and get an interesting gambling session with each time they spin the wheel!
