Philips Hue Play Sync Box Lite Could Fix Hue TV Lighting’s Biggest Problem: the Price

Philips Hue looks ready to make TV-synced lighting a lot cheaper with the leaked Hue Play Sync Box Lite, a stripped-down model listed in the UK for £109.99, or roughly $150.

The catch is exactly where the story gets interesting: Philips Hue appears to be trading ports and peak video specs for a price that normal smart-home buyers might actually consider.

➜ The real story: Philips Hue may have finally realized that asking nearly $400 for a box whose big party trick is making your lamps react to whatever’s on TV is a very premium way to solve a very optional problem.

The Lite model reportedly handles one HDMI source and supports up to 4K at 60Hz or 1080p at 120Hz, versus the current 8K box’s four HDMI inputs, 4K120, and 8K60 support.

That makes this less of a flagship replacement and more of a focused entry point for a streaming box, game console, or cable box.

Philips Hue Play Sync Box Lite Price and Specs Cut the Right Corners

The £109.99 listing puts the Lite at well under half the UK price of the current 8K model, although Philips Hue hasn’t confirmed US pricing.

For someone running one Apple TV, console, or set-top box, losing three extra HDMI inputs may not matter much.

Gamers with 4K120 displays, multiple consoles, or more elaborate home theater setups will still have a reason to pay for the 8K version.

Philips Hue Sync Box Lite Still Has One Big Smart TV Limitation

Like the existing sync box, the Lite appears to work by reading an HDMI signal before it reaches the television.

That means built-in streaming apps on the TV still won’t pass through the box, so they can’t be synced this way.

Philips Hue is also rumored to be preparing a screen-mounted Sync Camera, which could sidestep HDMI entirely and work with content playing directly on the TV.

With IFA 2026 arriving in early September, the timing suggests we may not have to wait long to find out which cheaper Hue Sync option becomes official.
